It affects the tissue and bone structure supporting the teeth. It also causes red, swollen, tender gums, receding gums, pain and bleeding, and depending on the severity, tooth loss.  By the time your pet is three years old, he or she will very likely have some early evidence of periodontal disease, which will worsen as your pet grows older if preventative measures aren’t taken.  Believe it or not, it is NOT normal for your pet to have bad breath.  Rather, it may be a sign of serious dental or gum issues.
